Projects highlights of 2019

As designers and makers we are fortunate to undertake a wide scope of furniture and custom work here at YARD Furniture.
2019 invited some exciting opportunities to create some truly beautiful pieces using Australian recycled hardwoods, most of which were salvaged directly from commercial and residential demolitions within Melbourne.
We’ve worked with railway sleepers from the Mornington Peninsula, Spotted Gum from the boardwalk of the St Kilda Lifesaving Club, 90 year old timbers from a residence in Elwood to mixed hardwoods from an 1940s  Sewing Factory in Brunswick.

Our projects have ranged from key pieces in our core range, to special custom projects, commercial work in the hospitality and health sectors and most special of all, YARD owner Peter McManus’ renovation of his 1870s Castlemaine home.

Here are some of our highlights from 2019.

Southern Mahogany Wall Unit

This wall unit was custom designed and made to transform a formal lounge room in an inner city Californian bungalow home.
The wall unit features adjustable shelves so new display options can be created as the shelves contents change. Ample storage underneath with a combination of doors and drawers provide a streamlined appearance and allows additional storage.
Made from recycled Southern Mahogany.

KEKOU RICHMOND

We were commisionned to design and build bar areas, dining tables, bench seating, beer taps and lounge areas for new craft beer and eastern feast restaurant Kekou in Richmond.
Railway sleepers salvaged from the Mornington Peninsula create the focal point of Kekou: upstairs and downstairs bar areas which house the impressive rotation of craft beer from around Australia.
Our Neptune sofas were custom made for a cozy nook in the restaurant for late night drinks and snacks, and bench seating against a backdrop of a living wall was utilised to encourage communal dining experiences.

Castlemaine Renovation

In addition to owning and designing and making for YARD Furniture, Peter McManus has been busy renovating his 1870s Castlemaine cottage in regional Victoria.
A cozy cottage with a rich history and many(!) layers of wallpaper and additions throughout its 140 year old life has kept Peter busy as he’s stripped the cottage to its original floors and walls, introduced recycled timbers throughout the home, and restored it to its former glory, with a contemporary touch.
Recycled hardwoods feature predominantly throughout the home, from key YARD Furniture pieces including the Stanley table and KUMO lounge, to a custom made kitchen with timber island bench, and custom bathroom.
The home is now finished and is available for short term stays and escapes from Melbourne via Airbnb.
